Beauty Report: Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid

Maybelline's new lip products have been on the shelf for quite a while now and they've gotten quite a lot of attention. Their ad is still playing on TV and I see it at least once a day on Facebook. Flashes of color (bright pinks, purples and reds), a quick look at the applicator, a swatch, some luscious lips and, of course, Gigi Hadid. She struts across the screen and she's wearing the product in Rebel Red. Very stunning and definitely makes a girl want to go get her hands on the popping' shades.

The product is advertised as a matte liquid lip color and this is where things may have gotten a little blurry. I had seen the mixed reviews on both Facebook and online before going in and purchasing the products. With that being said, I only purchased two shades (Nude Thrill and Nude Flush) because I knew that although the shades were beautiful, they were not true mattes. But despite there being hundreds of reviews of these online, I still wanted to give my two cents.

I liked the packaging, they are small enough to fit into any sized purse. They're rectangular which is different from a lot of liquid lipstick products from various brands, it also let you see what the product looked like because it was transparent, and the font was very cute and minimalistic. Overall, it had a very simple, yet chic look.

I saw some swatches of the products online and to be honest, I wasn't really impressed by the pigmentation. They seemed extremely sheer and shiny, which was the opposite of what I was hoping for. These are the two shades I purchased and I applied two layers so that you can have a better look of what the shades look like and this was done in natural lighting. I am love with the two shades and would definitely wear these for both everyday and glam looks.

In this shot, I'm wearing "Nude Thrill," and it was very close to the natural color of my lips. They have a distinct scent to them, nothing that was unpleasant though, at least in my opinion. (I took some shots in front of my window, with the light pointing towards me, but the shine completely threw off the color in the pictures.) I waited two minutes to see if they would actually become matte, but nothing happened.

I'm wearing "Nude Flush" in this shot (sorry for the blurriness! I tried to minimize the shine on this one to get the true color!) It's my favorite color out of the two, has the same scent and was unfortunately not matte as well as the first. I tested these out for a week and a half and because they were more of a satin finish, they did not last very long on their own. I had to reapply after eating and they definitely did not last more than four hours.

Here is another shot, wearing "Nude Flush" paired with a peach smokey eye. These shots, give you an idea of what they would look like in indoor lighting.

Overall, these were NOT MATTE, and shouldn't have been advertised as such. Perhaps "Satin" would've been a better choice although matte lips are trending right now, I can see why they would have wanted to push it towards that end. This led to many unhappy customers though, so not the best decision on Maybelline's side. I would describe the consistency in between NYX's lip creams and Too Faced's Melted lip colors. I was able to get them semi-matte by applying a lip liner underneath and found that they stayed on pretty well. I used MAC's lipliner in "Whirl" which complimented both shades.
